Gatina Primary School, the largest public primary school in Dagoretti North Constituency recently got a facelift when the Kenya Homes Expo in partnership with the Kenyatta International Convention Centre, refurbished classrooms as part of their corporate social responsibility efforts.
The primary school, which is funded by the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), educates children from Kawangware and Kangemi areas which are largely informal settlement areas. The Kenya Homes Expo, which is organized by HomesKenya Limited, partnered with the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), to renovate and refurbish the primary school which had debilitated classrooms that didn’t provide a conducive environment for the children to learn.
The two corporates embarked on a CSR initiative that would impact the operations of the entities, their partnerships, the wider real estate industry and more so the community. While handing over the refurbished classrooms to the School Principal, Mr. Wallace Gitau, Ms. Maureen Ojijo acknowledged that this was a great initiative indeed. She posed the question, “who better to help than children? To see the gratification on the children’s faces is truly fulfilling, we are changing the lives of children one classroom at a time”. She continued to add that “Real Estate events and publications is the core business of Homes Kenya Limited, and construction is the heartbeat of most of our operations, so as a team, we decided to pursue rehabilitation of the school via this channel.
At the opening ceremony of the 25th Kenya Homes Expo in April this year, Ms. Nana Gecaga, Managing Director of KICC, who has a heart for the less fortunate, spoke of this most beneficial partnership that would be seen as a social responsibility that would help uplift the lives of the less fortunate in society.
In January 2003, Free Primary Education was rolled out by the government. With this positive action, the program has seen increased numbers in the enrollment of children. According to the Economic Survey of 2005, enrollment rose from 5.9 Million children to 8.8 Million children in 2011. The FPE policy abolished school fees and other levies that posed hindrance to children gaining access to education. With lack of funds, public schools have struggled to stay afloat, and ultimately it is the children who are suffering. Maintenance of schools has been left to the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) and well- wishers to assist uplift the schools, and this is the story of Gatina Primary School.
HomesKenya Limited organizes the Kenya Homes Expo, the biggest homes and auto show in East & Central Africa. The next expo will be holding a successful 26th run is scheduled to be held next year from 12 – 15 April, 2018 at the KICC.
